I watched I, Tonya.
One of my favorite movies of all time is ‘I, Tonya’ with the one and only Margot Robbie. I am a huge fan of almost all of her movies, and well, if it were not for this movie, I would not have known about the great Tonya Harding in the first place.
If these concepts are new to you, I advise you to watch this movie because it is excellent and probably one of Margot's best works. On top of that, they only had 30 days to film the movie and all of that other back-of-the-scenes good stuff.
After watching this iconic film, I started doing my research on Tonya, which included watching videos, interviews, all of it. It started becoming an obsession. I was so interested in this woman.
Back then, maybe even now, figure skating was a very lady-like sport. Like they judged you off of presentation, and if you did not have the finest clothes to wear, the judges would notice that. Your points would be based on how well you did and what you were wearing. Tonya was not the richest woman in the rink and most of the time she had no choice but to make her own pieces, but she had the skating talent. She was associated with the word 'redneck,' which is how people saw her compared to the rest of the ice princesses. There is always a good guy and a bad guy in the media, and well, the media did a good job portraying Tonya as the bad guy.
In my opinion, if the skill and talent are there, who cares what kind of piece of cloth a contestant is wearing but unfortunately for these judges, it was most of what they judged. But, regardless of everything, Tonya kept going and lived through one of her best moments in life.
She turned out to be the first American woman to perform a triple axel. See, I am no expert in figure skating, but one thing I know is that this is a huge deal. Such a huge deal that many participants would not even try it because of fear of failure because of how hard it is. According to Google, the triple axel is the most challenging jump in a figure skating competition. As of last year, only 12 women have done the triple axel successfully in an international competition. I mean, for crying out loud, this is a huge deal, especially for a woman who had nothing but went for it and did it. It was the moment no one could take away from Tonya.
The triple axle was not the only huge thing that happened to Tonya. The whole Nancy Kerrigan attack changed Tonya's life as well. In a not-so-good way, though. Nancy was Tonya's teammate, and they were friends at one point, according to Tonya. Nancy was attacked with a police baton right to the knee. Many say Tonya was the one who had something to do with it, and others say she is entirely innocent. What we do know is that Tonya's ex-husband and her ex-bodyguard were the ones who set everything up, with or without Tonya's knowledge. Tonya told everyone she was innocent and had nothing to do with the incident, but the judge did not believe her taking all of her skating rights.
This struck out to me because skating was all that Tonya knew or had. Her mom was a bitch, and her husband at the time beat her and abused her. She did not graduate high school. Ice skating was all she had. She was willing to go to jail if it meant not losing her skating rights, but the judge did not budge at all. This scene in the movie will always get to me because I believe the verdict was unfair.
Watching Tonya's videos now, she seems like a great woman, a woman I'd like to meet one day and hug because of everything she has been through. However, she looks like she is at peace with herself now and living with people who love her. I wish her nothing but the best for being a badass woman out in the rink regardless of the snobby judges. I love praising women for breaking barriers, and I will forever honor the phenomenal Tonya Harding. The woman who taught me not to give a single care in the world and to be myself just like how she did.
